Honduran Farmers and Wal-Mart

August 5, 2008

Morning Edition on NPR has a great article on the collaboration that small farmers and Wal-Mart have entered into. One key for small farmers’ success is to sell to supermarkets like Wal-Mart. But this means that farmers have to meet some tough new standards. There are hygiene and packaging standards that they need assistance with. They have been getting this assistance from Swiss charities.

With food prices soaring and more people going hungry, many developing countries are trying to boost their food production. But it’s not enough to grow more food; farmers also need better ways to sell it. Small farmer, meet Wal-Mart.

The series of articles on Honduras continues tomorrow.
